VEHICLE HISTORY
The Ostwind entered service at the end of 1944 as a more powerful variant of the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind. It mounted a 37 mm Flak 43 anti-aircraft gun in a hexagonal turret open at the top and protected by distinctive armour. Its greater range allowed it to be used against aircraft and also against ground targets in close support; the units produced were assigned to the anti-aircraft formations of the Panzer Divisions.
