HISTORY: MONTECASSINO AND THE GUSTAV LINE
- From January to May 1944, the Italian Campaign pitted the Allied forces under Mark Clark against the German 10th Army under Heinrich von Vietinghoff, entrenched along the Gustav Line.
- Cassino dominated the valley of the Liri River and was overlooked by the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino, a strategic observation and defensive position for the German forces.
- The German positions were finally breached in mid-May, facilitating the Allied advance towards Rome and its liberation in June 1944.
