HISTORY OF PEGASUS BRIDGE
- During the night of 5–6 June 1944, in the early stages of Operation Overlord, the British 6th Airborne Division was tasked with capturing the movable bridge over the River Orne, near Ouistreham in Normandy.
- Securing this crossing, codenamed Pegasus, was essential to protect the eastern flank of the Allied deployment and prevent a German armoured counterattack towards Sword Beach.
- The British paratroopers arrived in Horsa gliders and overcame the German troops defending the bridge in a rapid action.
