HISTORY: STALINGRAD 1942
- The Battle of Stalingrad pitted the Red Army against the German army for control of the Volga and Don river region from the summer of 1942 until the first months of 1943.
- The tractor factory was converted during the war to produce T-34 tanks and was destroyed by bombing and artillery fire.
- In November 1942, the Soviet offensive encircled the Wehrmacht forces deployed in Stalingrad; the German surrender opened the way for the progressive Soviet offensive that reached Berlin in 1945.
