HISTORY DEPICTED
The scene is set during the German Ardennes offensive, which began on 16 December 1944 under the code name «Wacht am Rhein». Bastogne was an important communications hub and logistics centre; German forces surrounded the town and isolated American troops. The US 101st Airborne Division resisted the attacks until, on 26 December, a counter-offensive by armoured divisions of the US Third Army lifted the siege.
