HISTORY OF THE SAAB VIGGEN
The AJ 37 was conceived as a multirole aircraft for air defence, anti-ship attack and ground attack. The later JA 37 “Jaktviggen” variant incorporated new avionics, radar and weapons systems to strengthen its role as an interceptor in all weather conditions. The delta-canard design and the Volvo RM8 turbofan with afterburner enabled the Viggen to reach Mach 2.1; it was later progressively replaced by the Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
