HISTORY OF THE JU 87 “PICCHIATELLO”
The Ju 87 was one of the best-known aircraft of the Second World War, and its characteristic inverted gull wing became associated with the early stages of Blitzkrieg. The Italian Regia Aeronautica received examples for its ground-attack and dive-bombing units; the first Ju 87 B aircraft arrived at the 96.º Gruppo Bombardamento a Tuffo in the summer of 1940. Known as “Picchiatello”, the Italian aircraft were used over Malta, North Africa, the Balkans and the Mediterranean.
