HISTORY OF THE F-14A TOMCAT
- The F-14A's first flight took place on 21 December 1970, and production aircraft began arriving at units in 1973.
- VF-1 and VF-2 squadrons took part in the aircraft carrier Enterprise's final cruise in Vietnam, without entering combat.
- Its baptism of fire took place in 1981, during an engagement over the Gulf of Sidra in which it shot down two Libyan Su-22s.
- Italeri notes that updated versions of the Tomcat subsequently took part in conflicts in the Middle East and operations over the former Yugoslavia.
