HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The men of the British 1st Airborne Division, known as the “Red Devils”, took part in Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The operation, planned by General Montgomery, aimed to secure bridges over the Rhine and the Meuse using British, American and Polish airborne troops to facilitate the Allied advance towards Germany’s industrial heartland. It was unsuccessful, and the advance towards the Ruhr took place four months later.
