ROMAN HISTORY AND EQUIPMENT
- The legion was the basic unit of the Roman army.
- Each maniple was commanded by a centurion, identifiable by his greaves, vine staff and helmet with a transverse crest.
- After the reform of Gaius Marius, the legion’s equipment was standardised and supplied by the State.
- The legionaries wore shoulder-reinforced lorica hamata, semi-rectangular shields, two throwing pila, a gladius and a pugio.
