MODEL HISTORY
The Macchi MC.202 Folgore represented a significant advance for the fighter units of the Regia Aeronautica. It incorporated the German DB 601 engine, manufactured under licence by the Italian aircraft industry, a powerplant that improved its performance compared with earlier Italian fighters with radial engines. The first versions carried two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose; the armament was later reinforced with additional machine guns in the wings.
