HISTORY OF THE SPITFIRE
The Supermarine Spitfire was one of the best-known fighter aircraft in British aviation. Together with the Hawker Hurricane, it formed an essential part of the Royal Air Force’s fighter units during the Battle of Britain. The Mk.V variant, introduced in 1941 with a 1,440 hp Merlin engine, was widely distributed among operational units and flown by prominent RAF aces.
