MODEL HISTORY
The Macchi MC.202 Folgore represented a significant advance for the Regia Aeronautica's fighter units. Its aerodynamic design and the German DB 601 inline engine, manufactured under licence in Italy, improved its performance compared with earlier radial-engine fighters such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi MC.200. Agile and capable of reaching 600 km/h, the first versions were fitted with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose; the armament was later reinforced with additional weapons in the wings.
