HISTORY OF THE V-22 OSPREY
- The Bell Boeing V-22 project began in the 1980s, and its development continued for more than two decades before it was deployed with the US armed forces.
- Its two tilting power units with three-bladed propellers allow it to take off and land vertically, combining this capability with the performance of a conventional propeller aircraft.
- The United States Marine Corps is its main operator and uses it on transport and landing support missions. Its first operational missions in Iraq took place in 2008.
