The first aircraft were assigned to RAF Bomber Command squadrons at the end of 1940; it entered operational service in January 1941 and carried out its first wartime mission in February of that year against a logistical facility in Rotterdam. The Mk. III directly succeeded the Mk. I, with improved Bristol Hercules XVI engines and reinforced defensive armament.
