HISTORY OF THE ORIGINAL AIRCRAFT
The S.M.79 Sparviero was developed by SIAI-Marchetti in the 1930s as a civilian aircraft and achieved notable world speed records. Its characteristic low-wing configuration and three engines combined wood, fabric and metal in the structure. It was later adapted for military use and was widely used by the Regia Aeronautica during the Second World War, first as a land-based bomber in the Mediterranean and later as a torpedo bomber.
